There are multiple ways that guided visualization can help the mind stimulate healing and recuperation. Let’s take a look at a few key elements that work together to help the healing process here.

1. Initial calming and centering are key to receptivity

Lowering stress and anxiety and fostering a sense of peace and relaxation appears to be one of the keys to creating an optimal internal environment for healing. It’s also an essential element in fostering receptivity to the healing effects of guided visualization.

This is why calming the mind and body before visualization is so essential. An effective way to achieve this peaceful state is to use a technique called body scan meditation. The body scan is a mindfulness meditation practice involving scanning your body for pain, tension, or anything unusual. It helps to identify, relax, and release tension.

Studies have explored the efficacy of combining body scan meditation with guided visualization in different contexts and found that it can positively affect psychological well-being and stress management.

  • For example, relaxation and guided imagery strategies have been tested in symptom management for heart failure, highlighting their potential to improve anxiety and overall well-being.

  • Additionally, the combination of body scan meditation with guided imagery has been explored in interventions for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Studies have shown promising results in using guided body scan meditation to improve outcomes related to PTSD and alcohol use behaviors.

  • Another study examined the effects of body scan meditation on chronic stress markers biological level, assessing stress by measuring cortisol, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) from hair samples. Psychological stress load was measured by the Trier Inventory of Chronic Stress. The body scan group showed a decreased level of cortisol, and cortisol/DHEA ratio, as well as an increased level of DHEA, and decreased levels of psychological stress, a decreased value was observed in both groups.

As a result, guided visualization becomes more effective with an initial tension-relieving phase involving calming and centering exercises. This is critical to easing pain and anxiety in the moment and increasing our receptivity to the healing visualizations that follow.

2. Guided Visualization to Aid the Healing Process

Guided visualization uses the power of our minds and imaginations to nurture the healing of the mind, body, and spirit and enhance our functioning or performance. It uses vivid descriptions, engaging all the senses. This creates mental images, feelings, and sensations that help us imagine healing as though it’s happening now or has already happened.

By using all your senses you’re creating an authentic-feeling experience of having the desired outcome, you mentally and physically rehearse this desired state. It's a powerful way to nurture the healing process and empower a sense of agency in your recovery journey.

Methods like healing light imagery help listeners to visualize the healing happening and helps to lessen pain and other symptoms. Here’s an example of how this works, from our own guided visualization for Osteoporosis. The listener is suggested to,

“imagine healing light as a nurturing force, reinforcing and strengthening your skeletal structure. Feel its warmth and energy infusing your bones with health and vitality.”

There are many ways to invoke powerful imagery and healing experiences across almost any health challenge. Plus, research has shown that people who use visualization benefit in many ways, including:

These studies have found that using guided visualization to imagine healing occurring is a powerful, evidence-based healing technique. However, there are even more elements that can further help your healing mindset. We’ll explore the power of healing affirmations next.

3. Affirmations Help us Mold a New Reality

Another important element of guided visualization is positive affirmations that reinforce listener’s constructive belief in themselves and their ability to lessen pain, reduce fear and anxiety, and heal faster.

The neuroplasticity of our mind allows us to change the circuitry that weaves neurons into the networks that allow us to remember, feel, suffer, think, imagine, and dream. Affirmations can help us develop a more optimistic way of looking at ourselves, which is immensely useful when recovering from health challenges, especially long-term ones.

It’s easy to drift into fear and negativity after hearing scary health news or during a winding road to recovery. Shifting this fear, doubt, and feelings of helplessness into positivity and motivation can radically change your desire to make healthy lifestyle choices and keep up with your healthcare provider's plan for care and recovery.

Affirmations have been shown to significantly lower cortisol responses to stress with with benefits that sometimes persist for months and years.

With these capabilities, affirmations are a key element to guided visualization with the goal of longer-term healing and empowerment of the individual to heal and feel better in future health challenges.

Now that we’ve covered the body scan, guided visualization, and healing affirmation aspects of an effective guided visualization recording, let’s talk about a really interesting and powerful visualization technique: Best possible future self visualization.

4. Best Possible Future Self Visualization

Best possible future self visualization is another way to help the mind mold belief in the reality we want to create. In this visualization, the listener is asked to imagine themselves at a point in the future in which they live a happy, vibrant, fulfilling life despite the health challenges they’ve experienced.

This is critical because as one study shares:

“The more continuity a person shares with his future self—that is, the more that future self feels like a direct extension of who he is now—the more motivated he will be to act in ways that will benefit himself in the future.”

Furthermore, a meta-analysis of studies found that the best possible self method, where you imagine or journal about yourself in a future in which you have achieved your goals, increases optimism about life and well-being in the present.

Another study found that the positive future thinking manipulation led to a significantly larger increase in positive affect and positive future expectancies.

Future self-continuity has also been identified as a significant factor associated with improved health and increased exercise behavior. Studies have shown that enhancing the connection to one's future self can lead to positive health outcomes by promoting healthy behaviors like exercise and preventing behaviors such as overeating.

Finally, self-efficacy has been found to be a useful predictor of exercise behavior in individuals with conditions like peripheral arterial disease.

Thinking about your future self and imagining that ideal, healthy version of yourself is another key element to visualizing a healthy path forward and seeing and acting out those steps to get there.

While we want to encourage the belief that healing and increased well-being are possible, we’re careful not to suggest that people miraculously completely healed from any health challenges, but that they’re living their best possible life despite those challenges. This allows the listener to create their own healing vision of what they’re life would feel like within their experience.

Now that we’ve covered the key visualization elements, let’s conclude with the last essential piece that brings everything in the visualization experience together: a healing sound experience.

5. Sound Healing Adds Additional Healing Power

If you’ve experienced guided meditation or guided visualization in the past, you may have noticed calming music or sound in the background. This enhances the experience by making the listening more pleasant, but it can also further aid healing in its own ways.

Music clearly has the power to affect our health and well-being. This has been evident throughout history, but the clinical profession of music therapy is only some 75 years old, so we’re just beginning to understand why and how it affects us.

However, some research has emerged. In their 2018 study, Effect of 528 Hz Music on the Endocrine System and Autonomic Nervous System, Akimoto & Kobayashi found that,

“...music of different frequencies had different effects on the endocrine system, especially oxytocin and cortisol. Our findings suggest that 528 Hz music reduces stress even if participants listen to the music for only a short time.”

This information helps us choose music to accompany guided visualization, further enhancing this modality’s healing potential.

Final Thoughts

Each of these elements of an effective guided visualization adds to the profound impact that guided visualization can have on people’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Through the careful integration of relaxation, imagery, language, affirmations, music, and intention, guided visualization offers a powerful tool for accessing the body's innate capacity for healing and transformation.
